COMPLEX OF BUILDINGS OF CHARLES UNIVERSITY

The Karolinum- a complex of buildings of Charles University in Prague is an extensive historical complex of buildings from different time periods. The project solves the refurbishment of the entrance area of the Buquoy House – the Mázhaus called “Student gatehouse”.

Buquoy’s house was originally a Gothic house and in the first half of the 17th century it was rebuilt by Countess M.Buquoy. In 1754 the building was added to the University. The whole complex of buildings was rebuilt in 1945 according to the design by architect Jaroslav Frágner. Whole complex is heritage protected.

LAYOUT AND FLOW

The Mázhaus is an entry point for students, a communication node, a covered university square.

On the right side of the entrance is situated a new reception. Reception desk narrows the entrance slightly and its location allows better controllability of the space. On its left side there is an official board and the entrance to the library.

Behind the reception there are two small rooms- an exhibition hall and a technical room. On the left, behind the reception the arc in the wall is used as a bulletin board with current information. Further arched entrances on the left lead to the elevator, staircase and the student club in the basement. An information kiosk is situated between the arches.

The Mázhaus is finished by arched glass door which continues to the courtyard. These doors are typical for architect Frágner.

COLOURS AND MATERIALS

The most distinctive architectural feature for the Mázhaus is the small-format square sintered tiles in natural ocher shades, which the architect Frágner unified corridors throughout the complex. We respect this in our design and replace the tiles, but we try to preserve the original character as much as possible. For the corridor floors is therefore used ocher sintered tiles 10x10cm format with occasional brown accent. The importance of the house is illustrated by the additional red accent. In the exhibition hall, the color of the tiles is blue with a brown accent.

Another typical Frágnerov element is a large glass door with black framing. The space of the Mázhaus is also an original Gothic house with vaulted ceilings. We strive to respect all of these historical elements in the design and the basis for the design of the interior color.

Novodobé prvky, které do interiéru navrhujeme, jsou hlavně v podobě mobiliáře (např. cortenová recepce, perforovaná nástěnka), některých svítidel (kruhy nad recepcí, podélná svítidla na chodbě) a nových prosklených dveří (např. dveře do výstavní síně, studentského klubu). Barevnost těchto prvků je výrazná – rezavý corten reaguje na hnědý a červený akcent v podlaze, tmavé kruhy svítidel zase doplňují Frágnerovské prvky interiéru.

Modern elements we design for the interior are mainly in the form of furniture (eg corten reception, perforated notice board), some lights (circles above the reception, longitudinal lights in the hallway) and new glass doors (eg doors to the exhibition hall, student club) . The colors of these elements are striking – the rusty corten reacts to the brown and red accents in the floor, the dark circles of the luminaires complement the Frágner interior elements.
